Day trips from Glasgow by train (2026)

Last checked: 23 October 2026

Five easy days out by train from Glasgow, all with direct trains and all within an hour: a loch, an abbey town, a country park with a small zoo, a castle city and a big country park in Cumbernauld. Facts are checked against two sources, and anything we couldn't double-check is clearly marked.

Fares vary by time of day and how you buy, so we don't quote them. Check ScotRail or a journey planner before you travel. Journey times are typical; weekend and engineering-work trains can be slower.

1. Loch Lomond (Balloch)

Train from
Glasgow Queen Street, direct. On Sundays, Loch Lomond Shores says direct trains run from Glasgow Central.
Typical journey
About 45–50 minutes
From the station
Loch Lomond Shores is a short walk of about 10–15 minutes.

What to do

🌧️ If it rains: SEA LIFE Loch Lomond aquarium at Loch Lomond Shores (paid), a short walk from the station.

👨‍👩‍👧 With kids: Pair the aquarium with a play park at Balloch Castle Country Park.

Sources: ScotRail; Trainline; Loch Lomond Shores; Loch Lomond Shores facilities; Outdooractive walk; West Dunbartonshire Council; Hidden Scotland.

2. Paisley

Train from
Glasgow Central to Paisley Gilmour Street, direct and frequent
Typical journey
About 10–15 minutes
From the station
Paisley Abbey is about a five-minute walk.

What to do

🌧️ If it rains: The abbey itself, with its café, is a good indoor stop.

👨‍👩‍👧 With kids: A short trip, so it's good for small children: about 10–15 minutes on the train, then a five-minute walk.

Sources: Paisley Abbey; Trust Quest; Trainline.

⚑ Flagged: Paisley Abbey's website lists no entry charge, but we found only one source (Trust Quest) that says outright that entry is free. Paisley Museum is closed for redevelopment and isn't listed. Discover Renfrewshire says it reopens in early 2027, but BBC News (February 2026) said 2026, so we've not given a date.

3. East Kilbride (Calderglen Country Park)

Train from
Glasgow Central, direct
Typical journey
About 30 minutes
From the station
Calderglen is about 2 miles from East Kilbride station: roughly a 40-minute walk, or bus 21 to Mount Cameron and walk the rest. (One source for the walk; check Traveline.)

What to do

🌧️ If it rains: The tropical conservatory, part of the zoo ticket.

👨‍👩‍👧 With kids: Two play areas and a small zoo make this the most kid-focused trip on the list.

Sources: Trainline; ScotRail timetable; South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture; XploreScotland; Trainline: Calderglen.

⚑ Flagged: the zoo's ticket prices and opening times come from one source only, so we've left them out.

4. Stirling

Train from
Glasgow Queen Street, direct and frequent
Typical journey
About 30–35 minutes (ScotRail averages 31)
From the station
Stirling Castle is a steep uphill walk through the Old Town.

What to do

🌧️ If it rains: Stirling Castle's indoor rooms and the Wallace Monument's exhibition galleries.

👨‍👩‍👧 With kids: The 246-step climb at the Wallace Monument is a lot for small legs. The castle is the easier half-day.

Sources: ScotRail train times; ScotRail: Stirling; Glasgow Tourism; National Wallace Monument directions; National Wallace Monument arrival.

⚑ Flagged: the free shuttle from the Wallace Monument car park, castle and monument ticket prices, and the free status of the Church of the Holy Rude, come from one source each, so we've left them out.

5. Cumbernauld (Palacerigg Country Park)

Train from
Glasgow Queen Street to Cumbernauld, direct
Typical journey
About 25–30 minutes
From the station
Palacerigg is about 3km from Cumbernauld station. The nearest bus stops are a 17–19-minute walk from the park, so walk, take a taxi, or plan a bus on Traveline.

What to do

🌧️ If it rains: The visitor centre café, run by the volunteers of Palacerigg Community Trust. Check its hours before you go.

👨‍👩‍👧 With kids: Free entry, two play areas and a family trail make it an easy, low-cost day.

Sources: Trainline; ScotRail timetable; North Lanarkshire Council; Kidify; The Herald; Moovit; Palacerigg Community Trust.

⚑ Flagged: café hours (Thu–Sun 10am–4pm) come only from the trust's own site, and the Alasdair Gray mural and treetop walkway from one source, so we've left them out.
